“Juicy” Photography Self Portraits by 16 Year-Old Cristina Otero

I’m in the “DR” (Dominican Republic) with my daughter and a slew of her friends for spring break.   Unforgettable.  I’ll leave it at that.   It is going to take a while to process the experience, but once I’m ready to write about it, you will want to get the popcorn and settle in…

One thing is for sure, young adults LOVE to have their pictures made.  Frankly, if I looked as beautiful as they do, I’d be recording it too.  It’s amazing what you can do with an iphone, let alone something with a few more bells and whistles.  Sixteen year old Cristina Otero delivers some tropical punch with these amazing self portraits using only natural light and a Canon 1000D.

  1. It’s true that you can do a lot with just natural light and a camera, but that is not what happened here. Her eyes change color in every shot, the makeup/hair is enhanced on the computer, and sometimes I think she’s even enlarging certain features and doing more manipulation than simple color and level adjustments. I don’t think that takes away from the final work but I think it needs to be honestly described. This is digital art/photo-manipulation and not straight photography

  2. These are very cool. There is plenty of youth about the image but a lot of maturity in her process. Francesca Woodman started when she was 13. It’s more about moxie than age. check her out.
