“Kudzu” Mixed Media by Hannah Chalew

13 Aug

I’m reading a terrific new book, “1493″ by Charles C. Mann.  It delves into the history of how European settlements in the America’s shaped the world.  The speed at which diseases spread and wiped out the native populations is hard to fathom.  Similarly, the introduction of new flora and fauna into a virgin system wreaked havoc.

Which brings me to Kudzu.  I’m not sure if I’ve ever heard someone speak the word “Kudzu” without a tone of derision.  Having now read up on it, I think what it needs is a PR agency.  The plant has an awful lot of good qualities, including being a well known cure for hangovers.  See for yourself here.

Artist Hannah Chalew gives this creeper a chance in her wonderful mixed media works.

And if you like Charles Mann’s 1493, try his 1491. It’s about what life was like in the Western Hemisphere BEFORE Columbus. You’ll never think about life in the Western Hemisphere, or Native American peoples, the same way again.
