I’m a documentary junkie.  In February, during our endless winter, my husband suggested we watch “Finding Vivian Maier” on Xfinity.   This tale of modern day archeology, chronicles the 2009 discovery of a cache of negatives, photographs, and hundreds of rolls of UNDEVELOPED film in a Chicago public storage unit auction by young historian and now Academy Award nominated director, John Maloof.   Upon investigation, he uncovered the enigmatic photographer’s name and history.  Vivian Maier had been a career nanny and lifelong hoarder with a brilliant eye and knack for the completely ordinary.  The beauty of her street photography, and the mysterious story which surrounds it, convinces me there are wonders, yet to be uncovered, all around us. All we need to do is stop and look.

Tonight, in Nashville, a very special show of her work opens at Sherrick and Paul Gallery.   All are invited.  Snap to it and go.

Find out more about Sherrick and Paul and tonight’s opening!

  1. Hi Betsy, thanks for the post. I discovered Vivian Maier last year and watched the documentary as well. It’s really great. There was an exposition in Amsterdam last December, but unfortunately I was not able to go there. Hopefully there will be a new opportunity soon.

  2. Hi Betsy. Do you know the work of Lee Friedlander? It reminds me a great deal of Vivian Maier’s work – they’re both stunning in their simplicity and acute observation, as well as interesting self-portraits often involving mirrors. I treasure his book ‘Like a One-Eyed Cat’ which I bought years ago.

  3. Thank you, Betsy, for this exciting news! I can’t wait to go!
Thanks, also, for doing this blog. I love getting it. Lori Petrie
