“Bleak” Drawings by Maggie Evans
We leave for Austin in an hour. I’m stalling.
My daughter is leaving for college and I’m pretty sure there is nothing I can do to stop it. I’m a virtual Costco of emotions, supersized and unfocused.
Her bedroom is perfectly clean. It reminds me of her nursery 2 days before she was born. I remember sitting there 1000 lbs pregnant imagining what was to come. I’ll have to try that again.
Artist Maggie Evans captures my current mood.

In another 2 years!
Its like grieving, I have been crying for 3 months and got through the whole two days in Saratoga Springs and on campus fine. It was when we drove out of town on the way to the airport… you did a good job Bets. She’s off. running not walking. looking ahead, not back. And first semester will be over before you know it!! xxoo
Watching Meade drive away Saturday evening was a mixed bag of emotions for us, too. She has matured into a beautiful young woman but our chapter with them under our wing is over. Where did the years go? Sara leaves for her second year of college tomorrow and this wave of emptiness is hitting me all over again. I am grateful for this past summer, the life and stream of young people in and out of the house! Lots of love, Cathy
Wow…
It is heart wrenching
I sympathize and get it, as we just brought our youngest about 1000 miles away and left her there. She’s happy already, and yet the empty tables and chairs of this art are definitely a part of my emotional mix right now.
Nice find. I like the milky texture. Almost like a long exposure on a water scene with the waves all blurring to smoothness.
As for your daughter… I was up at 5am today to see my first-born off on her next co-op placement for university. We live in BC, and she’s at college in Waterloo, Ontario. She arrived home at noon yesterday off the Greyhound (her idea, but “never again” she said!), and was off on a plane to Geneva, Switzerland at (before) first light today. in between, she’d managed to unpack/repack, go shopping, meet her hometown friends and take the dog for a walk.
Whether we like it or not… they don’t really need us any more. It’s a good thing – we did our job! 🙂
