“Buck Up” Sculptures by Gordon Chandler
In 1925 ,the U.S. deer population was estimated at less than 300,000. Today, it exceeds 30 million! Makes me want to order venision.
Deer (the category incidently includes caribou, moose, and the like) are also the only creatures with antlers. Their super sensitive racks are actually the fastest growing living tissue on earth. For whatever reason, our Creator gave these animals a superdose of prenatal vitamins; and let it rip.
They also have dichromatic vision which means they don’t see the color red or its dirivatives. Seems unfair.
Artist Gordon Chandler drums up some fantastic creations including kimonos and mounted bucks.

The deer population is huge, and before the end of the summer they always manage to get in my vegetable garden. However, the summer of the drought, I did fill a huge barrel with water for them, and I miss seeing them these days as the coyote proves to be a huge menace to every creature who lives outdoors. So I must say this is a sad show with the deer heads wrapped in barbed wire.
Good for you for bringing another provocative visual to the table.

hmmm. The deer are compelling but seem to owe a lot to Deborah Butterfield, the heart reminds my of Jim Dine, and the kimonos seem fairly flat as sculpture and least intriguing. It is hard to be original and authentic(true to oneself). The deer make me think that it will be sad when all we have left of deer are metal ones instead of real ones.
I love the bucks. I live in deer country, and cherish the odd moments when I see a small herd of deer. I also like how Gordon Chandler has created something organic out of such industrial materials.
30 million? That is crazy. These are so interesting and inventive. I love his work.
