“Upcycling” Sculptures by Long Bin-Chen

My phonebook arrived last week.  It must have joined Nutrisystem because it is a shadow of its former self.    Telephony has changed so quickly it’s hard to even remember having a rotary dial.  I picture archeologists of the future buzzing with excitement when they unearth my Mickey Mouse phone.

Taiwanese sculptor Long Bin-Chen does a real number by upcycling old books and directories.

  1. I also love the way the pages look like stone. I am not as much of a fan of obvious “up-cycling” when people make things with obvious logos, etc. from the recycled material. Love the idea that something so flimsy as paper can look so heavy and impenetrable.

  2. I had the privilege of seeing one of his pieces in Rochester a few years ago. They are captivating. I love how the telephone book pieces take on the appearance of stone. Do you know if they are painted?
