“Upcycling” Sculptures by Long Bin-Chen
My phonebook arrived last week. It must have joined Nutrisystem because it is a shadow of its former self. Telephony has changed so quickly it’s hard to even remember having a rotary dial. I picture archeologists of the future buzzing with excitement when they unearth my Mickey Mouse phone.
Taiwanese sculptor Long Bin-Chen does a real number by upcycling old books and directories.

These are amazingly cool!
I also love the way the pages look like stone. I am not as much of a fan of obvious “up-cycling” when people make things with obvious logos, etc. from the recycled material. Love the idea that something so flimsy as paper can look so heavy and impenetrable.
This is great! It works on so many levels. My fav so far!
I love the when an artist takes the “usual” and makes it “unusual”. Very creative!
I had the privilege of seeing one of his pieces in Rochester a few years ago. They are captivating. I love how the telephone book pieces take on the appearance of stone. Do you know if they are painted?
